About Us

The Brave Penny Story

Brave Penny was founded in 2013 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to support those who grieve.  The co-founders Sharon Fox and Heather Rodriguez selected the name Brave Penny  to honor those “Brave” individuals who have experienced a significant loss in their life. “Penny” is to honor Sharon’s sister who was brutally murdered in 1996.

Sharon was inspired by the grief program at her church a few months after Penny’s death, to search for other resources on the topic of grief. Her journey to understand and then to share with others both the secular research and the clear example of God’s grief from the death of his son, Jesus, was found in Matthew 27: 45-54. The resulting program, Shadowlands has been delivered to thousands of participants over the past 25+ years. The program’s name came from Psalm 23 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me”.

Brave Penny quest is toEmbrace those who grieve. It was designed to serve those who have had losses not only from the death of a parent, spouse, sibling, adult child, infant or pet but, also of the grief like a birthmother’s choice for adoption of her child, abortion, suicide of a loved one, or a broken relationship. Those who have experienced a shattering traumatic grief event, can benefit from Shadowlands or the other topic specific programs.

Those who grieve should not be defined by a grief event. To live abundantly they should feel their value is based on God’s love for them. God does not want his children to suffer, he wants them to draw close to him. The decision to seek a Christian pathway to grief recovery will lead to joy and contentment.
